Message to the Membership

It has been a privilege to serve on the Board of Assiniboine Credit Union (ACU) for the last 3 years. With my education from the Asper School of Business, my experience as Executive Director of the Manitoba Cooperative Association and my commitment to community development, I believe I am helping ACU achieve balance between its financial goals and commitment to the community and environment.

In the last 3 years, ACU has been involved in many activities. From a large banking system conversion, to the introduction of many new products, including the Islamic mortgage and mobile banking, to the development and maintenance of numerous community partnerships, to the opening of a new LEED certified branch, and purchasing of an Insurance Brokerage. ACU has done all of this to better serve you, our member-owners. All the while, ACU continues to be a strong financial performer and continues to receive recognition for all of the work we are accomplishing.

With all of this there is still more we can do for you. There are many exciting projects on the horizon and it is my hope that with your vote, I can continue to serve as a Director on the Board of ACU.

Biography

I am Executive Director of the Manitoba Cooperative Association (MCA). I sit on the Board of SEED Winnipeg and as a director-at-large of 4H Manitoba. I have a Bachelor of Commerce from the Asper School of Business. I believe in balancing economic, social and environmental aspects of organizations.

The Nominating Committee asked

Q.

Please list your experience working on a board or committee.

A.

Since 2008, I’ve sat or chaired ACU’s Nominating, Community and Member Relations, and Governance and Ethics Committees.

I’m on the Board of SEED Winnipeg and director-at-large for 4H Manitoba.

At MCA, I report to a Board of leaders from Manitoba cooperatives and chair the Committee of Region Executives (CORE) of CCA.

Q.

ACU aims to have a Board that is representative of the members and communities we serve. We strive for gender balance, ethnic and cultural diversity, and diversity of age and life stage. A gap analysis of the current Board complement has been conducted and, in 2010, we’re looking for strong candidates with skills and experience in finance and environment.

To increase diversity on the Board we are also looking for strong candidates who are male, aboriginal, person of colour, person with a disability, active in the workforce, parent/guardian of school-age children.

Please elaborate on how your presence on the ACU Board would address one or more of these identified gaps.

A.

I’m 30.

Q.

What would be your greatest contribution to the ACU Board?

A.

My greatest contribution will be to bring my passion and commitment to cooperatives.

The statement of cooperative identity states “cooperatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity … cooperative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility, and caring for others.” This, along with the 7 cooperative principles and financial objectives are what I’ll continue pursue as they are fundamental to ACU’s existence.

My perspectives as a young leader within the cooperative community will help continue to place ACU amongst the most influential and admired cooperatives in Canada.
